For educators & coaches determined to make the difference they got in the job to make

Hi! I’m Kayla. Professional Nerd + Book Lover + Author + Cocktail Connoisseur + Champion for Learning that Changes Life Trajectories

I grew up in poverty with a 9 out of 10 ACE score, and I beat the statistics because of the people and experiences outside my home that made me feel like I belonged. Now I make sure I’m not the only one.

After 16 years in classrooms, curriculum design and coaching, I developed Resilience Focused Learning, a way of teaching and leading that builds belonging, autonomy, achievement and possibility into every learning experience. Because when we get that right, we don’t just transfer information. We change what’s possible for a kid.

I work with educators, program leaders, coaches and online service providers who want to make the difference they got into this work to make, without guessing at how.

If you want learning that does more than teach a skill, you’re in the right place.

what is resilience focused learning?

Over time I’ve learned that a great learning experience isn’t just about the academics. To raise kids who are critical consumers and positive participants in the world, academics have to be the vessel we use to teach the life skills they need.

Resilience is one of those skills. It’s for every kid, and it’s essential for impacted populations. Kids who grow up in poverty, instability and traumatic environments need resilience to create a new future for themselves.

I know this because I watched two kids grow up in the same home and end up in completely different places. The difference wasn’t what happened inside the house. It was the positive experiences outside of it.

That’s what Resilience Focused Learning is built on. It’s the delivery method, the how of teaching, and it works with any content you already teach. It builds four things into a learning experience so people don’t just hear it, they feel it:

Belonging. They feel safe, seen and part of something.
Autonomy. They get real choices and something to be in charge of.
Achievement. They collect small wins that prove they can trust themselves.
Possibility. They see someone like them make it, and believe they can too.

We can change life trajectories, and it starts in our learning experiences.
